Special Issue

Mapping Translation and Performance

General Introduction

This special issue combines two keywords that have helped shape the discourse of transnational cultural studies since the end of the twentieth century: performance and translation. Influenced by poststructuralism, postcolonial theory, feminist theory, and queer theory, both disciplines understand culture not as monolithic essences tied to geography or ethnicity, but rather as sites of encounter and exchange. Through public performances and translations across national and linguistic borders, culture instead reveals itself as fluid, shifting, constantly on the move.
