2018 Situations International Conference

The Culture Industries in Asia: Into the Digital Age

The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

 Friday 30 November-Saturday 1 December 2018

The emergence of digital technology has brought about far-reaching transformations in many parts of the world, with the creation of the Internet and the multiple forms of wireless technology making access to information easy and immediate. As a consequence, digital culture has been celebrated for empowering individuals to express themselves and to create relationships with people all over the world.

More recently, however, digital technology has begun to destabilize in unpredictable ways the set of dominant cultural and social institutions by which most human beings have created meaning and purpose in their lives. Coming to global prominence in the course of the twentieth century, the cultural industry—the social and cultural institutions of newspapers and magazines, radio and television, film and theatre—are now under sustained stress due to their inability to find a new and sustainable profit models.

Perhaps as a consequence, the many forms of digital culture are witnessing a tremendous struggle over issues of freedom and surveillance. Social media platforms have allowed people to communicate remarkably quickly, forming new relationships and spreading information and insight in rapid ways. At the same time, the greatly enhanced ability of central networks to monitor, record and store all information have revived the fears of a surveillance society.

At the same time, there is growing alarm about the ways in which digital media tends to undermine existing institutions and forms of governance, as manifested by such phenomena as the alt-right in the West and radical right-wing movements like Ilbe in South Korea. Indeed, the emergence of a new populism in many parts of the world attests to the decline of established media institutions, which are widely seen as having lost touch with the realities of those left behind by globalization.

This conference will explore the ramifications of the digital revolution on the culture industry in the late twentieth and early ttwenty-first century.
