 Situations Conference for Graduate Students

“There is No Us without You”:

Postcolonial, Feminist, and (Post-)Marxist Perspectives on the Other in Asia

Date: Monday, February 8, 2021

Venue: Online Zoom

We invite submissions of 4000 word essays on the vital topic of “Encountering the Other in Asia” in various films. In today’s Asia, we witness political struggles and confrontations divide nations along ethnic, regional, gender, class, and ideological boundaries. The liberal democratic ideals of egalitarianism and freedom of speech have been undermined by political and financial elites seeking to maintain their power and by the hegemonic groups that view their privileges threatened by minorities. In these hard times, the economic impact of the Covid-19 has struck most harshly the ethnic, class, gender, or ideological minorities. Democratic nationhood, defined by Ernest Renan as a daily plebiscite or referendum, seems to have receded in many Asian nations. The spirit of tolerance and social responsibility, instead of the destructive binarism of Us versus Them, must again become moral imperatives for the majority. We are after all indebted to each other in an interdependent world. We would like to invite postgraduate students in Asia to give presentations on the struggles of socially marginalized groups in their countries in this time of crisis. This conference will feature presentations from the following invited scholars, and we anticipate that many postgraduate students will be interested in taking part in this important unfolding scholarly debate.

Invited speakers:

Dr. Akira Mizuta Lippit (USC): “There Is No Other US but us”

Dr. Gina Marchetti (Hong Kong U)
